We love the softness and delicacy of Mary here. The artist gives her a gentle countenance, and one of a dreamy mystery. Her image is done with the three primary colors surrounded by beiges and tans. This devotional piece would look perfect in many rooms.

The text below Mary reads, Dolce Cuore di Maria Siate la salvezza mia, which means, Sweet Heart of Mary, Be my salvation. Then it says, 300 g. d’ ind. Those are instructions for an indulgence. The Italian word for days is giorni, so if the penitent said that short prayer (and possibly one on the back), then he or she would gain a 300 day indulgenza (300 less days in purgatory).

On the very bottom is the publisher’s name, along with the item number (470! I would love to see the other 469! But I wonder how they could compete in beauty with this one!). The abbreviation, App. Eccl., means Approved by the Church (Approvazione Ecclesiastica). This card is a splendid example of Nineteenth Century piety, mystery, and devotion.
